Evoking Emotion through Minimalist Design
The objective of this project was to create a minimalist design using figure-ground techniques to evoke empathy and emotional depth, reflecting my internal conflict between motherhood and returning to school. Targeting creatives and individuals who appreciate symbolic art, especially mothers facing similar struggles, the design conveys guilt, sacrifice, and perseverance without words. A mother’s silhouette is split into two parts: one side representing traditional motherhood with three children, and the other side portraying work duties and household tasks, highlighting the pressures women face in balancing multiple roles.
Simplifying Complex Emotions with Negative Space
The project began with research into visual storytelling and figure-ground art techniques.
I iterated through sketches and concept maps to refine how the mother’s silhouette could represent the emotional conflict between her family and career. Each step was carefully revisited to ensure the artwork communicated complex emotions through simplicity. Strategic use of negative space helped communicate guilt, sacrifice, and perseverance. Weekly check-ins ensured the design maintained its emotional depth and clarity and being successful with the challenge in using figure-ground techniques to illustrate internal struggles
A Versatile, Evocative Design
The final design successfully communicated deep emotions through minimalist design. The client was extremely pleased with the outcome, and the design's versatility was recognized across different formats—featured as part of a campaign project, a book cover, and a gallery piece. This project tested my problem-solving skills, and upon reflection, I would further refine the composition to include my fourth child and streamline the symbolism for a more balanced visual narrative.
